  1. A small nation of N.Europe, the name derives
  2. from the latin Belgae who occupied this 
  3. territory in Roman times. Originally the 
  4. South Netherlands it became an independent 
  5. kingdom in 1830, its constitution dates from
  6. the following year. Its neutrality was 
  7. guaranteed by the European powers and Russia 
  8. in 1839 but this was violated by the German 
  9. invasion in 1914 and again in 1940.
  10. Capital- Brussels.
  11. Major ports- Antwerp, Ostend and Zeebrugge.
  12. Major towns- Liege, Ghent and Bruges.
  13. Principal exports are iron and steel, 
  14. textiles and petrochemicals. 
  15. A mainly flat country, with some hills and
  16. forest in the S.E. it is inhabited by people
  17. of Flemish and French extraction which 
  18. resulted in two main languages being spoken.
  19. In the north Flemish and in the south Walloon
  20. with some German on the eastern borders.
  21. The currency is the Belgian Franc. 
  22. Became a founder member of the Benelux Union
  23. in 1948, a founder member of the Council of
  24. Europe in 1949, a founder member of European
  25. Coal & Steel Community (ECSC) in 1952 and a
  26. founder member of the European Community(EEC)
